WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Monday, the city West Palm Beach city leaders may vote on a new way to fight crime faster in certain parts of the city.

Commissioners are taking a first look at a new ordinance that would have cameras and other surveillance installed on the property at St. Mary’s Medical Center and JFK Medical Center North.

"Both hospitals own land along Greenwood and Congress Avenues, which are gateways to West Palm Beach. Allowing cameras at those locations could provide crucial information when solving crimes and searching for missing people -- especially Silver Alerts," West Palm Beach police said in a statement.

The ordinance states this is all a part of West Palm Beach police department's new Real Time Crime Center, which launched in November.

It uses city cameras, dispatch systems and ShotSpotter technology to be more proactive and reactive to crimes.

If the ordinance passes, the city would just need to get permission from the hospitals to install the added measures.

According to the ordinance, police have determined these areas around the hospitals will help them crack down on crime.

Since launching the Real Time Crime Center, police have also been asking homeowners and business owners who have security cameras to register them with
the department in a free program.

If you want to share your thoughts on this, the city commission meeting begins at 5 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
